Chat

  • Bendik75: no chat, or just empty?
  • Bendik75: ...empty, everyone watches Magnus-Vlad
  • Theokratix: not empty. Should be a way to see who's kibitzing
  • Garnoth: this game could be very interesting
  • Garnoth: is he going to play grunfeld again?
  • gargle: it's interesting to see rybka evaluations for solid book lines
  • Garnoth: this turned into a kind of schlechter slav or something?
  • pesho: Please welcome the commentators for today GM Bauer, NM Pete Karagianis, and Jason Juett. Thank you for joining us!
  • pkaragianis: Yes, certainly not a main line Gruenfeld.
  • pkaragianis: I am surprised to see Ivanchuk with a -10 score as white vs. Anand (26-16), though that does include blitz, blindfold, etc.
  • JJuett: Not a very ambitious choice against the Grunfeld, in my opinion.
  • pkaragianis: Yes, Bd2 is the move that simply doesn't do much... my guess is that Ivanchuk was thrown off by Anand's opening choice, which is a surprise
  • pkaragianis: According to my database, in 113 previous meetings Anand has NEVERused the Gruenfeld against Ivanchuk. So this was an early surprise, and he has reacted passively.
  • pkaragianis: Their latest meeting was in this year's Linares, so perhaps Ivanchuk was expecting a Slav (which he saw there).
  • pkaragianis: Black's position looks promising already, with the simple idea of ...dxc4 and ...e5.
  • F22: Promising as in achieved equality, right? He has no advantage yet
  • Garnoth: but anand began using the grunfeld after his match with leko in hungary, he played grunfeld there
  • pkaragianis: Yes, I don't think it's unreasonable to say that black is already equal.
  • pkaragianis: I see 10. Re1 (either) in the Rybka analysis below but it does not consider the idea of 10. e4 first and only then Re1, e.g. 10. e4 de4 11. Ne4 Ne4 12. Be4 e5 (for example, probably the most active black move) and then 13. Rfe1.
  • pkaragianis: Interesting
  • JJuett: The tactical justification for Na4 is that dxc4 with a b5 fork doesn't work due to Qxc4 b5? Qxc6, hitting a8.
  • godfather: In your line JJuett, if black then takes a4 Qa8: isn't Ba6 a good move for black?
  • godfather: Attacking the Queen with Rf8, and threatening the bisschop on d3
  • pkaragianis: godfather- perhaps then just Qxf8 and Bxa6
  • godfather: but then black has Q + N against 2 rooks
  • godfather: isn't that interesting for black?
  • pkaragianis: Actually what is interesting is that I was going to point out the plan Of Na4 and Bb4 along with the idea of e4 last move, but I just simply didn't believe Ivanchuk would go for it.
  • pkaragianis: Lesson learned!
  • pkaragianis: His position is set up rather nicely to play on the queenside, so this makes logical sense, but I just have a hard time believing it is something concrete
  • MrMagoo: Anand understand this game, I think it looks drawish at first, but we'll see. Ivanchuk knows the grunfeld I think
  • pkaragianis: Picturing this position with a Bishop on b4, the white pieces look more jammed up than menacing.
  • pkaragianis: I think an idea with Re1 and e4 looked more promising, white can't keep his pieces there forever.
  • pkaragianis: By 'there' I mean on b4 and a4.
  • pkaragianis: Oddly, though, if you look at white's position he is 'classically set up' for play on the queenside... his pawn chain aims to the queenside, his queen and knight may coordinate against b7, etc., but it just does not seem like he will achieve
  • pkaragianis: anything concrete there.
  • LuisBlasco: Hello at all, International Arbiter Luis Blasco, speaking from Madrid
  • godfather: hi
  • MrMagoo: hello
  • waustad: Are these light colors hard to read for everybody or is it my aging eyes?
  • pkaragianis: hello Luis!
  • jfchessmaster: anyone from cuba
  • MrMagoo: argentina here
  • LuisBlasco: hello pkaragianis
  • LuisBlasco: Hello Bauer if you are there :)
  • pkaragianis: Bb4 is the natural continuation here, but again it doesn't accomplish much, moreover as he computer points out, black has the tactical reply starting with 11, dc4
  • JohnColtrane: Aronian is fine
  • MrMagoo: I can't see the time usage on this game, Does anyone have same problem?
  • ramprasad: clock shows 0h:0m here as well
  • neigeren: let's hope it'll be a timeless games:)
  • JohnColtrane: in the oficial broadcast, this game has not clocks
  • MrMagoo: I can't get into the official website either
  • pkaragianis: I think I liked the tactical refutation to Bb4 better for black... 11. ...dc4 12. Qc4 b5! etc. Black hasn't given anything up here, but white's bishop just went from d2-b6... quite a substantial gain.
  • pkaragianis: The bishop will be much stronger outside the pawn chain on the h2-b8 diagonal than it was sitting on d2.
  • pkaragianis: Just picture the bishop on d2 with the knight on c3, and then look at it now. Amazing how strong these players are at activating their pieces. Nice idea by Chucky, but Anand certainly could have reacted better.
  • Garnoth: had vishy's rook been on f8 this would not have been possible
  • pkaragianis: OK so the threat is, if for example Bg3, just b5 and the c6 pawn is held. But, white has Qb4.
  • pkaragianis: Amazing, just compare this position to that after 9. ...Qe7. White's dark square bishop is very active, and black has moved two pieces backwards.
  • neigeren: looks good for chucky
  • pkaragianis: Ivanchuk is really trying to prove he has made something out of his queenside maneuvering, and so far I have to agree that he has. Black is severly lacking in development, white needs only to pull his bishop back and then put a rook on the c-file.
  • Garnoth: this position looks really strange!
  • pkaragianis: I keep coming back to this: compare the position to that before 9. ...Qe7- Anand's ninth move may have been a real stinker.
  • pkaragianis: I will be interested to see what Anand says about it after the game.
  • Slaven: Does anyone know how much time do thay have now? And why the clock isn't working
  • F22: Anand is great at getting out of lost positions (not that this is lost yet) and Ivanchuk has squandered many won positions so I would say Anand's chances are looking pretty good
  • MrMagoo: I personally do not like the white queen so exposed there, but have to admit, it may be trying to go out of the books.
  • MrMagoo: agree F22
  • dv: i'm unable to see the clock. is something wrong with my browser or is it widespread? i don't know what the clock on each side shows!
  • F22: I dont see the clock either
  • F22: I see 0h:0m
  • dv: thanks, that's a comfort
  • Garnoth: anand's position looks almost laughable, placing that bishop on b7
  • pesho: the official broadcast for this game is without the clock, that's why it's 0:0 here too
  • MrMagoo: think anand is preparing Nb8-d7 to push the Q away to start
  • pkaragianis: Well, the bishop needs to get out somewhere. Earlier, it looked like black was going to play for ...e5, but his 9. ...Qe7 was inaccurate. So now, Anand intends to fee himself with ...c5.
  • pkaragianis: I think the real story in this game is what Anand will say about 9. ...Qe7 after the game, and whether or not Ivanchuk can accomplish anything with his bishop maneuver. If you think about it, we could have achieved this same position if white
  • pkaragianis: had just played Bf4-d6 straight away.
  • pkaragianis: They have played 15 moves but the pieces have only made 10 moves.
  • neigeren: any news on the clocks?
  • stelling: Yeap, as if black played 9. ... Re8 and white replied with 10. Na4, Bb4, Bd6 in just one move!
  • Slaven: on chessok stands that Ivanchuk have 49m and Anand 59m, but there is always something messed with clocks on chessok
  • neigeren: @thx slaven
  • MrMagoo: pk, Ne5 for white would not accomplish much at this stage, right?
  • pkaragianis: Moves for white here? I actually like Rybka's third-best, h3, so the bishop will always have a safe retreat.
  • Zeblakob80: to MrMagoo, it allows Blak to free himself at a cost of a pwan (according to Rybka?!)
  • pkaragianis: Yes, I, too, am not a fan of Ne5- I think I'd like that diagonal open for a potential bishop retreat.
  • neigeren: a4 is good enough I'd say
  • Zeblakob80: Anand play the semi slave regularly, and he is familier with the ideas behind the (blocked) bishop on b7. In the semi-slave black frees himself with the automatic c6-c5.. which is not the case here ..
  • pkaragianis: Well, keep this in mind:
  • pkaragianis: black WILL play c5 at some point, I don't believe it can be prevented, as b4 simply runs into ...a5 with activity elsewhere for black.
  • pkaragianis: So the real question is, what is the best way for white to position himself so he is prepared for ...c5.
  • pkaragianis: Should he play e4 and go for the center? This is very reasonable.
  • pkaragianis: How about just the quiet h3 and Bh2 and Rc1? Also good.
  • pkaragianis: Ivanchuk has several options, so let's see what he comes up with.
  • glarange: who am I to second guess these supermensch, but wouldnt 13...Nb6 have been better?
  • siamesedream: Is Chucky in time trouble yet?
  • Slaven: Let's just hope time won't be the decisive factor in this game
  • reverye: Something's wrong with the clocks. I can't see the time
  • vaughn87: test
  • Destrudo: Bxb5 in some lines?
  • Destrudo: to get a knight to d6
  • Destrudo: doubt it, but it would be intersting =0)
  • Zeblakob80: The plane that consits on playing against the blockade of the b7 bishop does not work (how to explaine this to Rychka, as Spassky called it )
  • kravi: It will be agreed draw in few more moves
  • pkaragianis: Supposedly Ivanchuk has only 9 minutes for the remaining 19 moves.
  • kravi: both Ivanchuk Kamsky take long time for first 25 moves and reel of the rest in few minutes
  • ULTRAMODERNIST: Vishy too much for theses guys
  • ULTRAMODERNIST: hehe
  • ULTRAMODERNIST: Amazing cant analyze Vishy's games with the old chess as Bobby would say even with the Old robots nice site though!!! hahaha
  • gargle: do we know how much time the two have left?
  • ainglepack: They are yet to complete the code for displaying clocks
  • Morrowind: Hmm, long time no moves?!
  • godfather: black is slowly taking over the game, who would've thought that after 10-15moves?
  • greenknight: i really hope this doesn't become Ivanchuk 0 - 1 Ivanchuk's clock
  • gargle: how do you know ivanchuk is behind on the clock?
  • greenknight: blue comment above
  • MrMagoo: Chucky is my favourite, but he is not making much progress with time management, and that counts too. Anand handles that better. Agree with greenkight, hope to not see the clock beat Chuky (again!)
  • MrMagoo: and now I see why Vishy made Bh6.... he is really good
  • lucchi: what do you think of rook's endgame??
  • JJuett: This is going to be a fairly drawish rook endgame in my opinion.
  • lucchi: it's draw or win for black??
  • JJuett: Ivanchuk will be able to get his rook behind the passed pawn.
  • lucchi: thank you jason
  • neigeren: draw
  • JJuett: Good endgame alertness by Ivanchuk. The drawing idea is that White will check on d7/d8 and Black can't avoid a perpetual without giving away the h-pawn or placing his king on a terrible square like h6.
